Consumer demand is unprecedented for natural personal care ingredients that are proven to work. Thanks to the pandemic, we have seen the emergence of a savvier shopper – one who researches their beauty products and ingredients before making a purchase. This means that it is paramount any claims are supported by science.

Some companies understand the importance of science-backed claims, not only because this is what the consumer truly seeks, but also because it adds to their credibility. People want to buy products from a reputable, trusted company, and will come back time and again when they know that they are given the right information. That’s why ingredient testing is important and sharing the results of this testing is critical.

At Demetrix, we produce bioactive ingredients, and our first product is Arete-G™, which is the cannabinoid CBG. We develop bioactives with the greatest promise for human health and wellbeing, and we only produce those with proven efficacy. Our CBG went through rigorous application research and, most recently, MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) assay testing to demonstrate that this product is effective for skincare.

We discovered some interesting results from our CBG MIC testing. This cannabinoid was found to be effective against an overgrowth of the bacteria C. acnes that causes acne. Current treatments are comprised mainly of antibiotics which can be harsh on the skin. In addition, C.acnes is part of the natural skin microbiome. A compound that is gentle on the skin and can help bring C.acnes back to healthy levels would be a desirable treatment. CBG was found to inhibit growth of this bacteria, demonstrating that it has promise as an anti-acne ingredient.

CBG also has potential against the bacteria that can cause cavities and periodontitis. Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.gingivalis) and Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) are important bacteria for oral health. S.mutans is known to have a role in cavities, while P.gingivalis is a key pathogen in periodontitis, which can cause tooth loss and deterioration of gingiva. We tested CBG against both of these strains, and discovered that it was able to prevent the growth of P.gingivalis and S.mutans. CBG had a stronger response against P.gingivalis, but the ability to inhibit the growth of both microorganisms demonstrates promise for oral health.

CBG is clearly a promising cannabinoid but sharing the results of our research is key to boosting its credibility as an effective bioactive ingredient. Without this knowledge, the consumer cannot make an informed choice about the products they choose to take care of themselves. At our core, Demetrix understands the significance of research, and we are dedicated to researching the properties of cannabinoids and other bioactive ingredients to put the best products on the market. Through our processes, we are also able to provide access to rare bioactives which allow us to conduct research and enable future testing of these ingredients. And this only benefits us all in the long run.
